Machining a groove around a rim

Does any one know if a typical machine shop has a tool or machine that would machine a groove (1/32") around the side of a mag wheel like the old H-D Sturgis wheels ? I havnt asked the local shop yet , just getting some ideas . Thanks . BooBoo

I think it's called a "lathe". Any engineering shop that has a lathe with a big enough swing, should be able to do it for you.

LOL ! Yeah I know a lathe makes things go around and around , I just didn't know the typical machine shop had one that could make a 16" wheel go around and around . Thanks . BooBoo

My bud has a "gap bed" lathe, it will swing 6" radius over the bed and 12" radius through the gap.

it should be a fairly straight up gig.. i understand your question.. your concern is if a regular shop will have a machine that will handle the diameter of the wheel.. i think they should be able to do it..

it can be done on a milling maching with the wheel placed on a rotary table.
