Rage, I'm not a metallurgist by any means...Hopefully Steve (mechwerks) will chime in to answer, but I believe box ing it in with strap as we did on the downtube protects the inner point of stitching from twist and torsion...If welded by a professional. Good clean pocketless welds with good penetration in the parent metals is essential. Now guys I don,t know what a stock hardtailed XS650 frame weighs, but mine now weighs about 38lbs...The springer could easily approach that weight itself. We talked about doing the same thing on the front end but felt that it would demand too much attention to the front 1/2 of the bike. I must admit it is more appealing by the minute....! Cheers.

Bobby's and Jason's work is out side the box and very cool.
Anybody done any stress tests on the stuff?

Redintn, no tests have been carried through on my stuff,,,can't speak for Bobby. But I do know that before this thing is painted or coated I'll be abusing the shit out of it myself...with DOT approved bubble wrap and helmet, of course. Integrity and safety are first in my projects...and no-one but myself and my 270lb., 6'5" linebacker of a project partner will ever throw a leg over this thing before we are 100% covinced of it's safety.

Gimme some ideas guys on what y'all (I am from TX)[I] do to test these kind of components. Cool means nothin' if your not around to enjoy it. How do you other garage guys properly test this stuff?

Another cool use of a beam similar in size to this would be to suspend the seat with the beam as a cantilever with a singular mini shock...not on this scooter, but maybe some thing with a sportier, more aggressive stance!!??

I'm no engineer, but I think both Jason's and Bobby's "beams" are strong enough for a springer. Face it, we all have seen some pretty weak looking springers that work. Both of the designs seem to be boxed in well and look to have sufficient strength.

Jason, instead of making the whole front end from I-beams, maybe just making the front spring legs wouldn't take too much from the rest of the bike?

I used a BFH, a few broke. More practice and less and less failed, till I felt good about my welding skills.
Granted this is not the end all of tests, just one that was at hand.
I dont know how to tell yall how to test what yall have made.
Maybe put in in a press and see if it bends or breaks the welds.

Man I like that I-beam a ton. Like the guys say, you need to work that into the theme of the bike more. Forget how long it takes. Every time you look at it you will grin.
