xs650 boardtracker...ish

Here is the frame , minus some gussets and cleanup. We've not yet fab'd anything for brackets. Got an old chapparal gas tank comin' for it. It's gonna be a narrow tank with cool stamping. Thinkin' silver or nickel powder coat on the frame. Looking at 50's era household appliances for color ideas for the tank. Was gonna do the frame in black but I want to show the worK that went into the downtube. Ideas?

Look for pic below..I can't get resize to work on new thread...It happened earlier, too.

maybe...

Sorry for the wait. Well here are the beginnings of a frame. We took the stock XS 650 frame, put on a TC Bros. hard-tail, Dropped the neck 2" out & 2" down. We cleaned up all the neck area...we will be puttig in gussets later. The neck was cut down to accept Harley cups...We made shims from 1.25" 12-point sockets on both ends...rosette welded, of course. The down tube is made from some 2" tubing bent into about a 15' radius. I found it at an old railroad/icehouse/shipping yard that had been abandoned years ago. We found the right bends we needed to mate the lower rails with the down tube in a frame from an old parted Gold Wing. We haven't done anything in the way of tab or brackets yet, as we are awaiting arrival of the old chapparal gas tank, etc. More pics and details shortly.

details... As you can see from the artsy-fartsy pics, We cut the curved tubing down the centerline. We squared the two halves in opposition to each other...weld them on both sides to give the half-ass hour glass look. Then, I drilled 1/2" holes along the length ....evenly spaced. Next, I pressed in lengths of 1/2" rod to extend slightly past the curved edges of either side of the "beam". Then I drilled holes from the welded seams on either side of the "beam". I drilled through the existing weld and into the rods. We then rosette welded the rod in place. After we checked the integrity of each rod, We capped the stitched sides witn strap steel...comin' up just short enough from each side to give plenty of stitch. We purchased a Shop Fox 12" disc sander to plave out all the surfaces....giving the impression of a round I-beam with no visible welding or inside corners.

Jaded, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I feel like an ass...It sucks to be "detail oriented" and overlook some obvious stuff like that.

Wab, that disc sander is great...it's just the disc...but, damn, it's aggressive...High RPM and 100 grit makes for fast, if not nervous, work. I was impressed with the lack of run-out on the thing. It comes with rubber feet attached but no through holes for rigid mounting. But that bitch is so heavy and runs so true that it goes nowhere. I still use the belt sander or a drum for finish work. Que viva la Shop Fox!

Thanks. I was originally gonna do the boardtracker idea with a Banshee motor...stock or even with the triple mod. on two 23". I have to do things on the cheap so I was gonna use 23"x1.6" rims from a couple of 500XLs that came my way. But, the folks at Buchanan Spoke convinced me that it wasn't a safe idea. So, I compromised. We're using your average 40 spoke drop center rims with narrow-glide hubs...all powder coated black...brushed stainless spokes. Avon Distanzia front and rear. Planning on using a DNA springer, but I'll have to make different rockers as I'm 1.5" too short on the front. Oh yeah, we are using the narrowglides so that we can stack the brake rotor and the dished sprocket on the left side...clean right. It's cheaper than a sprotor set-up. I wanted to use a wide springer and narrow-glide hubs, because I may end up not selling this one...depends on how many more compromises I have to make! Anyway I like my bikes to have parts that can cover a wide array of future projects. I can use the springer later on a "zero" type scooter and the hubs are dual disc capable. Even though the front will be a brakeless "spool" I think the O.D. of the hub and the look of the spoke flanges all lined up like rivets will bring the simple industrial look fromthe frame to the wheels. Thoughts?
