New Honda VTX 1800 Build

I had some issues with the last build. Wife lost her job, money got tight in a hurry and I just didn't like the way it was turning out. It was too long, too raked, I didn't like the seat height, radiator placement, tank, etc..... So....... I chopped it up and started over!

This bike is already further along in 4 weeks then the other one was in , well, a long time. I used a Envision Engineering tank, cut the bottom half off and then built the tunnel and bottom sections. The frame is raked at 48* and seat height is around 20".

Custom frame
Xtreme Machine Outburs wheels 330 rear, 23" front
Converted to chain drive from shaft
Bike measures out at 10' 5"

Here are some pics of where I am on the build now. I'll post more pics soon.

Still a long way to go but I've got most of the parts to finish everything. Just gonna take time now.

J.D.

Yep. Everything in the one unit. That is one of the things that makes this difficult to do. That and about 3 dozen other things including water cooled and a huge wiring harness.

Well. Got a little more work done on the sheetmetal. Time to take a break. Out of cash and have Christmas on the way. I have enough material to keep me busy for a few more days buy I've got to get the chain tensioner and Sprotor before I can finish the left side. I can wait a little while. No big deal. I've got to do some work on the wiring harness. That will take a while anyways. Here is where I'm at now:

I know my sheetmetal work is not the best. It's very patched and crude but every bit of it was done by hand and ball-peen hammer. I'm just glad there is tigers hair and bondo!!!!!! lol

quite the contrary of "crude and patched" I find the work to be very good and the pics give a good idea what a guy can do in his garage...if it were me, I wouldnt grind down the welds or smooth it, I wouldnt paint it (let it rust) and have a very post industrial looking bike, but I like shit to look a little dirty. This bike isnt my personal style, I have a feeling its gonna be a very polished looking smooth bike, but hats off for the work you've done cause I gottta say you have vision and skill, I like the patched look alot..a whole lot

I finally got a chance to get started back on my project. I've been going out of town remodeling a house for a guy to get the money I need to keep working on the bike. I've gotten a lot done in the last two days and I'll get to work on it some more over the next week or so. I'll post pics when I can.

I finished a lot of the sheetmetal but still have a little more to go. This has been a great learning experience. Working metal is hard when all you use is a ball peen hammer and a grinder! I'm using 22 guage metal on all the skin and used 18 guage on the tank. Here are the latest pics:

I will put some type of mesh in the openings. The radiator will be in there so I need to make sure I have good air flow going through.

Sorry. Didn't have time to clean up before I took the pics.

Been working on the bike some more. Got the motor back in it to make the top motor mounts, passenger peg mounts and I finished the handle bars tonight. Still a long way to go but I'll get there.

I've got my pipes ordered but they will have to be modified to work. More soon.

Nice work, done a little metal bashing myself, and this is very impressive.
Instead of the bondo why not use lead. Lead is forever, or at least a lot longer. And in all honesty not that much harder.
Nothing worse than putting on custom paint and having it fail because of the putty underneath.

Use AllMetal................

No talcum powder and a different binder that will not absorb moisture.....that is why bondo thickens, even with the top on it, it starts to aborbs water from the start, when it is made........All-Metal by USC, looks like lead, moisture resistant, and sands and shapes like bondo......I think it feather-edges better.....

I'm going with the all metal. It looks like that will be a learning experience too. I've got a guy that does this for a living that will be helping me. Thanks for the info guys.

Tries my hand at building a set of pipes last night but it pretty much turned out to be a desaster. I used a set of Razor pipes I bought of ebay and then GREATLY modified them. I dont like them at all. I need some 2 1/4" radius rolled and some 1 3/4" pipe. Anyone know of a good place to get it? Any help will be very much appreciated.

J.D.

Worked on the pipes some more. They are not exactly what I want but I guess they will do for now. They will be painted black and wrapped. I'll add a chromed heat shield to a few areas.

Here's what I came up with. Another first for me.
