Ohio Special Construction Title

Just titled my new custom build in Ohio and this is what I found out first hand.

Once you finish your build and have the three manditory things complete as stated by the Highway Patrol Officer at the Seville Ohio inspection station.

1- must have mufflers, no straight pipes or baffles, must be legal mufflers.
2- working turn signals front and rear along with brake lights etc.
3- handlebars no more than 15" off the seat so leave those 21" apehangers off until after the inspection

Now your ready to go:
1st thing- visit your local license bureau and pay $53 for an inspection reciept that will have a number on it required for making the appointment for inspection, don't try to schedule without it.
2nd- call one of the inspection locations listed at www.ohiobmv.com and schedule an appointment and be prepared for about a month wait unless you can slide into someone elses cancellation time but that is a crap shoot.
3rd- while your waiting for your day to come, go through your reciepts to make sure you have MSO's for motor, frame and transmission plus verify that they are already in your name and notorized. (This will save you a return visit) If you have Ebay items or used items it helps to print out the aution info and get it notorized or create a reciept for any home made parts and get it notorized if at all possible.
4th- Show up for the inspection at least a half hour early. They will want/ask you to unload the bike in the parking lot and ride it into the station so they can hear it and see that it is drivable.

Note-- You just never know who (Highway Patrol Officers) is working that day and so you may have a breese and you may be coming back because the guy is a smart ass or in a bad mood My first inspection in November the guy was a prick and wouldn't accept my reciepts for the frame or engine even though I had the MSO's in my name and notorized. I had to get the original reciepts from Krooners for the stuff. I rescheduled and went back with the same reciepts and had a different officer and he barley looked at them, just started stamping away They stamp every reciept with their logo so that they can't be reused. My second visit on Jan 4th was simple and smooth, the guy was really nice and couldn't figure out why they didn't pass me the first time so you never know.

5th- Now your ready, with the yellow inspection sheet in your hand and all your paperwork its off to the title bureau for the best part, THE TITLE!!! The people there only wanted the MSO's for the frame, motor and tranny, nothing else other than the Yellow sheet the HP guys gives you. No sales tax was required by the title office as it is assumed that you payed sales tax along the way of buying all your stuff so don't worry about having to pay when the bike is titled. I was nervous because the inspector told me they would review and charge me sales tax when I titled. The lady at the title office said she could care less and if the state has an issue or question they would contact me directly.

Now the best part!! Off to the license bureau for a plate and now I'm waiting on winter to end so I can ride my legally titled custom bike, what a great feeling!!

Note; you must have a 17 digit number stamped into the frame or it will require one of the states vin tags, they drill holes in your frame to mount it plus it requires a second visit for the tag installation. My buddy had an old frame with only a 13 digit number so the made him come back with the bike, they called him about three weeks later to say it checked out. He had to hall it back down there and they mounted it right infront of the tank, looks ugly so if your concerned about where it goes you might want to think about this when purchasing a frame. All of the new ones come with a 17 digit nuber across the front motor mount.

All I can tell you is from my first hand experience, I've heard good and bad but it truly depends on who is working that day! The regular guy in Seville is truly a nice guy, the subs he had working on his day off were a bunch of wise guys that had fun at my expense making all kinds of jokes about crushing my bike etc..... GOOD LUCK!!

OR- title it in a state such as Tenn where all you have to do is show up at the title office with a reciept and mso for the frame. Thats all that is required to get a title and makes things a whole lot easier! I've heard that some places down there are selling new frames with titles already in hand at an outrages price like a $900 dollar frame with title for 3 and 4 grand! You choose? is it worth 3 grand to save the hassle?? Sometimes it seems like it is..
